Dana Barstow, formerly Dana Mitchell, was named the head coach of the women's volleyball program in February of 2017.

In 2018, the Blazers improved their win total by two games, and Payton Belella and Elena Zinaich both made their third appearances on the All-Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth Women's Volleyball Team. Five student-athletes were named to the MAC Fall Academic Honor Roll. 

In her first season, Hood posted a one-win improvement over the prior season and Payton Belella was named All-MAC Commonwealth. Seven student-athletes were named to the MAC Academic Honor Roll. 

Mitchell comes to Hood after serving as the head varsity coach for both boys and girls volleyball at James Hubert Blake High School, her alma mater, in Silver Spring, Maryland. She became head coach of the boys program in 2012 and took over the girls team a year later. She is also currently the coach of the Columbia Volleyball Club 13-2's team and a head coach for JK Volleyball. In 2014-15, Mitchell was the head coach of the UMBC women's club volleyball team that attended the national tournament. She also served as the head coach of two teams that belonged to the Champions of Tomorrow Volleyball Club during the 2012-13 season, one of which placed second in Gold for the South Atlantic Championships.

Before attending James Madison University and playing a year of club volleyball for the Dukes, Mitchell earned Montgomery County All-Star and Gazette Honorable Mention. She received a Bachelor of Science degree in kinesiology from JMU in 2010.
