FREDERICK, Md.--Freshman point guard Brenden Straughn of the men's basketball team has been picked as the Hood College Athlete of the Week for the week ending Feb. 1.
Straughn poured in a career-high 29 points in a 97-81 upset over the University of Mary Washington Eagles at Gov. Thomas Johnson High School Saturday, helping the Blazers end a four-game losing skid. Straughn buried five three-pointers and hit 10-of-13 from the foul line, including a perfect 8-of-8 in the final two minutes to keep the Eagles at bay. Straughn also dished seven assists and collected four steals in addition to pulling down three rebounds.
Originally from New Carrollton, Md., Straughn is currently fourth on the team in scoring, averaging 10.9 points per game. He is also the team leader in assists (78), steals (39) and lists third on the squad in three-point field goals (19).
The Blazers return to the hardwood Monday hosting Gallaudet University at 8 p.m. at Frederick Community College.
