FREDERICK, Md. - Josh Gall (Odenton, Md. / Arundel) of the baseball team and Heather Silveira (Baltimore, Md. / Chesapeake) of the women's track and field team are the Hood College Athletes of the Week for the week ending on May 3.
Gall led the team to a sweep over Lancaster Bible, 10-1 and 10-2 on April 27. In the first game, he went 3-for-4 with four runs batted in. Against Penn St.-Abington on May 1, he drove in a school record six runs, leading the Blazers to a 23-5 victory. He finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored, two doubles and a triple. The six runs batted in give Gall 55 for the season and puts him in the top 10 in Division III. On April 28, he was named the Commonwealth Conference Rookie of Year and was selected to the all-conference first team at catcher. The freshman closed out his season ranked among the conference leaders in nearly every offensive category. He is second in the Commonwealth in hitting with a .425 batting average and 49 runs batted in; tied for second in doubles (14) and home runs (5); third in slugging percentage (.685) and hits (54); and fourth in on-base percentage (.490). The honors continued as Gall was named Corvias ECAC South Division III Rookie of the Week after his performance the week ending April 26.
Silveira won the 100-meter hurdles and set school records in both hurdle events to lead the Blazers at the 2015 Middle Atlantic Conference Championships. She broke her own school records in both events. She ran a 15.49 to win the 100-meter hurdles. The time cut a quarter of second off the mark she set just two weeks earlier. In the 400 hurdles, she finished fourth, but set a school record with a time of 1:05.73. It was the second time in as many days that Silveira set the Hood record in the 400 hurdles. After running a record 1:06.98 in the preliminaries on Friday, the senior was over a second faster in the finals. Both times qualified Silveira for the ECAC Division III Championships later this month.
