FREDERICK, Md. - Joseph Benton (Mechanicsburg, Pa. / Cumberland Valley) of men's tennis and Heather Silveira (Baltimore, Md. / Chesapeake) of women's track and field are the Hood College Athletes of the Week for the week ending on March 30.
Benton won both his singles matches and a doubles match against McDaniel and Lycoming. His singles win against the Green Terror was Hood's only point of the day. He led the Blazers to its first Commonwealth Conference win of the year with a 9-0 sweep of Lycoming. The sophomore only dropped one game in the second set to Son Phan to win 6-0, 6-1 at fifth singles. In third doubles, he paired with Raymond Rivera for an 8-4 win over Zachary High and Zackary Collevechio. Benton is 3-1 in singles since joining the team in the spring.
Silveira claimed wins in the both of the hurdle events and led the Blazers to a come-from-behind victory in the 4x100 relay. She was second in the triple jump and set a new personal best by over a foot. The senior had close to half a second on the pack in the 100-meter hurdles. Her time of 15.93 is the fastest in the Middle Atlantic Conference by seven tenths of a second. Her victory in the 400 hurdles was by a margin of over five seconds with a lap in 1:09.34. In the 4x100, Silveira's anchor leg led Hood to the win in 54.45.
