FREDERICK, Md. - Chris Cook (Mechanicsville, Va. / Lee-Davis) of men's basketball and Heather Silveira (Baltimore, Md. / Chesapeake) of women's track and field are the Hood College Athletes of the Week for the week ending on March 1.
Cook had a game-high 19 points and added four steals in the semifinals of the Commonwealth Conference Men's Basketball Tournament. The senior guard was also named the Commonwealth Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Year in voting by the conference coaches last week. He becomes the first Blazer to win a conference athlete of the year award in any men's sport. He is also the first Hood student-athlete to win an athlete of the year award since Jessica Parrish in women's track and field in the Capital Athletic Conference in 2009.
Silveira shattered the school record on her way to the 60-meter hurdle championship at the 2015 Middle Atlantic Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships at Lehigh University's Rausch Field House. The senior's time of 9.54 earned first team all-conference honors and topped her previous school record of 9.67 seconds, set at last year's championships. She also became the first Blazer woman to win a conference crown since Jessica Parrish at the 2010 Capital Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships.
