FREDERICK, Md.--Senior Alex Engler of the men's lacrosse team and senior Emily Maerz of the women's tennis team have been tabbed Hood College athletes of the week for the week ending April 28.
A product of Century in Sykesville, Md., Engler finished the season with a superb game on Saturday against the Pride from Widener. The senior concluded his collegiate career scoring two goals and assisting on two others for four points. Engler scored the first two goals of the contest for the Blazers and his four points tied a career-high for points in a game. Engler finished the season with the team lead in assists with 14 and leaves the Hood program as the all-time leader in assists with 35. Engler also tied for the team lead in goals this season with 11 and his contributions over the past four seasons will surely be missed.
Maerz, who is from nearby Myersville, Md., finished off her Blazer career in style with a sweep in her two singles and doubles matches this week. Maerz helped lead the Blazer women to their first win against a Commonwealth conference opponent with a 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 1 singles against Lycoming on Saturday afternoon. Maerz would then etch her name into the Hood record books, as she and teammate Olivia Hosch recorded their 12th doubles win of the season, which broke the previous team record of 11 that was set in the 2001-02 season. The senior wraps up a fabulous career that saw her finish in third place on the all-time singles victories list and she will go down as one of the best to ever go through the tennis program.
