FREDERICK, Md.--Junior Sophie Grizzle of the women's outdoor track and field team and senior Casey Dunn of the softball team have been named Hood College athletes of the week for the week ending April 21.
A Brunswick, Md., native, Grizzle broke the school record in the grueling heptathlon in a competition held at Mount St. Mary's University Thursday and Friday. In her first attempt at the seven-event outing, Grizzle's total of 3,420 points was so far ahead of the previous record that had she decided not to contest the final event, she still would have broken the record. Instead, she won the final event, the 800 meters. Over the two days, Grizzle won three events: the 110 hurdles, the high jump (in a new school record 5’ ¼”), as well as the 800. She finished second among the seven competitors and is currently the fourth-ranked multi-eventer in the Middle Atlantic Conferences.
Originally from Clark, N.J. and a product of Arthur L. Johnson, Dunn had a very productive week for the blue-and-grey and helped lead Hood to an important sweep of Widener University on Sunday afternoon. Before the game, Dunn was honored for Senior Day and she left her mark with one of her best performances for the special occasion. She contributed three hits in the first game, including her first career home run in the fifth inning. In the doubleheader Dunn had four hits and two RBI from the lea-off spot and chalked up two outstanding defensive plays in the second game to help ensure the sweep for Hood. Dunn has been instrumental in helping Hood attain a fourth-place showing in the Commonwealth standings with three games remaining.
The softball team (20-15, 8-7 Commonwealth) will return to action this Thursday when they hit the road to take on Arcadia University in a one-game makeup contest that will begin at 4 p.m. The track and field team travel to participate in the 117th Penn Relays this Friday.
