FREDERICK, Md.—Junior Randolph Clark of the men's lacrosse team and senior Emily Maerz of the women's tennis team have been named Hood College athletes of the week for the week ending April 14.
Originally from Chesapeake Beach Md., Clark has had a phenomenal season in regard to face-off victories and groundballs and this past week was no different. In the games played against Commonwealth foes Messiah and Alvernia, Clark lost just five of his faceoff attempts, as he went a combined 31-for-36 in the two contests. His 19 faceoff wins against Messiah matched a season-high with the Falcons having no answer for Clark's quick reactions. Clark was also able to grab 23 groundballs in the two fixtures and has a team high 125 groundballs on the season. He is currently ranked eighth in NCAA Division III in face-off win percentage (.688) and 15th in ground balls per game (8.93). Clark also caused two turnovers and assisted on a Blazer goal to round out his impressive week.
A product of Middletown in nearby Myersville, Md., Maerz had a solid outing for the women's tennis team over the weekend against conference foe Alvernia. Maerz won her first singles matchup in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0 for her seventh dual match victory of the season. It was also the senior's eighth victory overall this season, as she continues to have an impressive campaign to end her career. Maerz also teamed with freshman Olivia Hosch to win first doubles over the Crusaders with an 8-1 decision, the tandem's first over a league opponent this season.
The men's lacrosse team (3-12, 0-6 Commonwealth) returns to the playing field this Saturday when they hit the road to take on Lycoming College at 1 p.m. The women's tennis team (2-8, 0-3 Commonwealth) gets back on the court this Wednesday when they host Commonwealth rival Messiah College at 4 p.m.
