FREDERICK, Md.--Sophomore Caleb Phillips and junior Sophie Grizzle of the Hood College track and field teams have been tabbed Hood College athletes of the week for the week ending Dec. 9.
Phillips, who is from Gov. Thomas Johnson High School here in Frederick, had a very good meet over the weekend at the Hagerstown Community College Invitational. Phillips and his three teammates set Hood's school record in the 4 x 800 with a time of 8:34.04. Phillips continued his strong form in the 800 coming in second place with a time of 2:04.43, which was also good for a Middle Atlantic Conferences (MAC) qualifier. Phillips also ran a leg on the second-place 4 x 400 meter team. His one first place and two second place finishes were very encouraging for the Blazers moving forward.
Grizzle is from nearby Brunswick High School and had an outstanding day at Hagerstown. Grizzle qualified for the MAC championships in the pentathlon and also competed in five events on the day. The high jump was also a successful event for Grizzle, as she finished in third place with a jump of 1.39 meters and qualified for the MAC championships. Grizzle was also a part of the winning 4 x 400 meter relay team and placed in sixth in both the 55 hurdles and the 800. Grizzle's versatile performance was key in helping the Hood women to their strong effort at Hagerstown.
The track and field teams will go on a month long hiatus over the holidays with both the men and women returning to action at the State Farm Games on January 19. The meet will be hosted by West Virginia University.
