FREDERICK, Md.--Senior Justin Stone of the men's basketball team and junior sprinter Chelsea Young of the women's indoor track and field team have been tabbed Hood College athletes of the week for the week ending Dec. 3.
Stone, who is from nearby Brunswick, had a sensational week of play for the Blazers. Hood played its first two games in the Commonwealth Conference and Stone played some of his best basketball. Stone recorded double-doubles in both games and helped lead Hood to a 14-point victory over Stevenson. Stone also set a career-high with 19 rebounds against Lycoming, while also scoring 18 points in the Blazers' two-point defeat. In the first two conference games, Stone is averaging 15.5 points, 15 rebounds and 5.0 assists per game. Stone is ranked amongst Hood's all-time leaders in numerous categories, including 10th in scoring, fourth in assists, second in steals and fourth in rebounding.
Young is from nearby Walkersville High School and was competing in her first indoor meet this season at Dickinson College. Young competed in the 55-meter dash and started out with a time of 7.83 seconds in her preliminary round, which broke the school record of 7.87 she set last season. Young shattered her record again in the final, finishing fourth with a 7.75. The time Young ran has already met the Middle Atlantic Conferences qualifying standard for the 55 and if she continues to improve upon her mark she may be a tough runner to beat in the conference this season.
The men's basketball team (4-2, 1-1 Commonwealth) returns to action this Wednesday when they take on Messiah College in conference action at 8 p.m. at BB&T Arena. The women's indoor track and field team returns to action this Saturday at 2 p.m. when they travel to Hagerstown to compete in the Hagerstown Invitational.
