FREDERICK, Md.--Junior midfielder Eric Diehl of the men's soccer team and junior outside hitter Amy Hagerdon of the volleyball team have been selected as the Hood College athletes of the week for the week ending Sept. 9.
Diehl earns his second straight accolade after he once again had a hand in all three goals in a 3-0 Blazer win over visiting Mt. Aloysius College Thursday. Diehl, from Gaithersburg, Md., scored twice in the second half and assisted on Hood's first goal in the third minute versus the Mounties. Diehl's two scores bring his seasonal total to four. Along with his three assists, he leads the team in scoring with 11 points. Diehl sits in third place on Hood's all-time scoring chart with 34 points on 13 goals and eight assists.
The Blazers' next game is slated for Tuesday against Shenandoah University at Thomas Athletic Field. Hood sits at 1-0-2 on the young season.
Hagerdon, from Berryville, Va., contributed 16 kills, 30 digs, three assists, one block and one ace in a pair of matches last week. She finished one kill shy of a double-double in Hood's Commonwealth Conference debut at Arcadia University Wednesday, tallying nine kills and 17 digs, then followed that up with a seven-kill, 13-dig effort in a 3-0 sweep of Penn State-Harrisburg the very next night.
Hagerdon is Hood's statistical leader in kills and digs and is one of only two Blazers to appear in every set through Hood's first four matches. She is also five aces away from cracking the top 10 all-time in the Hood volleyball record book.
The Blazers (2-2, 0-1 Commonwealth) entertain four opponents this week, beginning with a Commonwealth Conference match Tuesday against Alvernia University at 7 p.m. at BB&T Arena. Hood also hosts Notre Dame (Md.) University Thursday and a tri-match with Michigan-Dearborn and Penn State-Mont Alto Saturday.
