FREDERICK, Md.--Junior attack Trey Freeman of the men’s lacrosse team and junior first baseman Kelly Gafner of the softball team have been chosen as the Hood College athletes of the week ending March 18.
Freeman, from Olathe, Kan., had a solid statistical week in the team's two games this past week. In Wednesday's contest versus Misericordia, Freeman scored in the first period with Hood down a man giving the Blazers a 3-2 lead at the time. Freeman also had a groundball and a caused turnover to go along with his goal, however the Blazers dropped the contest 8-7.
Hood then hosted its first Capital Athletic Conference game of the season and narrowly lost in overtime 7-6. Freeman had a big game despite the loss scoring three goals on seven shots for his best game thus far this season. Freeman also contributed with four groundballs and a caused turnover.
On the season Freeman is now third on the team in goals with eight and fifth in points with 10. He is also sixth all-time in goals with 33 and eighth all-time in total points with 50.
The Blazers (2-7, 0-1 CAC) return to action this Saturday when they hit the road to play against CAC rival St. Mary's (Md.) at 1 p.m.
Gafner, from right here in Frederick, Md., had a very good offensive output in the Blazers' nine games they played this past week. The Blazers took a trip to Clermont, Fla., at the National Training Center and Gafner may never want to leave for the weather and her offense. She batted .406 for the trip, which led the team, and also had a game-winning two-out base hit that scored two runs and gave the Blazers a victory against Mount Ida.
On the season Gafner leads Hood in batting average (.417), on-base percentage (.440), hits (20) and has struck out just twice in 48 at-bats.
Gafner and Hood (5-9) return to action this Tuesday when they travel to take on Eastern Mennonite in a nonconference doubleheader starting at 3 p.m. Hood then hosts Wesley College in its CAC and home opener Saturday. First pitch is set to be tossed at 1 p.m.
