FREDERICK, Md.--First-year attack Shane O'Keefe of the men's lacrosse team and junior Emily Maerz of the women's tennis team have been chosen as the Hood College athletes of the week for the week ending March 11.
O'Keefe, from South Glastonbury, Conn., had a hand in six of Hood's nine goals last week. In Wednesday's contest against Messiah College at Thomas Athletic Field, O'Keefe notched his second collegiate score in the second quarter to get the Blazers on the board. Then in the third period, O'Keefe assisted on Corey Roberts' seventh goal of the season to cut the deficit to 7-3. Hood came up short against the Falcons, falling 11-3.
The Blazers then traveled to Neumann University Friday evening and registered a narrow 6-5 victory. O'Keefe had his best game as a Blazer against the Knights, amassing four points in the triumph, which included assisting on the eventual game-winning goal by teammate Spencer Freemon on an EMO. He also contributed a pair of goals, including one on a man-up situation, to help the Blazers end a four-game slide.
O'Keefe is tied for second on the team with 10 points and leads the squad with six assists. He and the Blazers (2-5) return home Wednesday to host the Misericordia University Cougars in a nonconference game at 3:30 p.m.
Maerz, from Myersville, Md., was a winner at singles and doubles for the Blazers in a 6-3 victory over Virginia Wesleyan University at Goucher College. The win was Hood's first of the spring season. Maerz improved to 5-2 in singles play with a 6-1, 6-3 win over VWC's Cay Gee at first singles. She and doubles partner Emily Schrodel upended Gee and Katelynn Duncan at first doubles, 8-3, to up their doubles mark together to 4-2.
Maerz and the Blazers (3-4, 0-1 CAC) next travel to Wesley College for a Capital Athletic Conference match March 24 at noon.
