FREDERICK, Md.--Sophomore Tyree Wilson of the men's track and field team and first-year Heather Silveira of the women's track and field team have been named the Hood College athletes of the week for the week ending March 4.
Both Wilson and Silveira competed in Hood's first outdoor meet of the season, the Lloyd Sigler Spring Meet hosted by Salisbury University.
Silveira, a distance runner who came to Hood from Baltimore and attended Chesapeake High School, earned 18 points at Saturday's meet, helping the Blazers finish second in the team standings. She finished third in the 400 meters, trailing two women from NCAA Division I program Coppin State, and was the runner-up in the 800 meters. Silveira was also part of the winning 4 x 100 relay and the third-place 4 x 400 relay squad. Her events on the day ranged from 100 meters to 800 meters.
Wilson, a sprinter and hurdler who hails from Wilmington, Del., and is a product of St. George's Technical High School, was one of three individual winners for Hood at the Salisbury meet as the Blazers finished third. Wilson won the 110-meter hurdles in 15.90 to lead a field of 14. He also contributed a leg on the second-place (of seven teams) 4 x 100-meter relay and the sixth-place 4 x 400 relay.
The Blazers will take a partial squad to Coastal Carolina University this weekend for the CCU Invitational.
