FREDERICK, Md.—Senior Chris DiGangi of the men’s track and field team and sophomore transfer Chelsea Young of the women’s track and field team have been named the Hood College Athletes of the Week for the week ending Jan. 29.
DiGangi and Young were two shining stars in an afternoon of brilliance for the track and field program, which captured its first men's and women's team titles Saturday at Hagerstown Community College. Both teams won their respective crowns in a six-team field.
DiGangi, from Brick, N.J., won his specialty at Hagerstown at 14’0” to lead a 1-2 sweep in the event. This win will greatly impact his standings this season in the Capital Athletic Conference rankings for the pole vault. DiGangi is a two-time CAC vault champion and has now won the vault in seven regular season meets.
Young, from Walkersville, Md., was an integral part of the women’s team title win. She won the 300-meters to set a new school record (44.15) and to lead a 1-4-5-6-7 Blazer finish. Young also placed third in the 55-meters and fourth in the 55-meter hurdles. She wrapped up her successful day by running the first leg on the winning 4 x 400 meter relay team setting another school record. Young and the Blazers outscored runner-up Goucher College, a team Hood had never defeated before, by 96 points.
The Blazers track and field teams will next travel to Dickinson College Saturday for a 10 a.m. invitational.
