FREDERICK, Md.--Senior forward Lavar Rich of the men's basketball team and freshman Alexandra Dystant of the women's track and field team have been named the Hood College Athletes of the Week for the week ending Jan. 22.
Rich, from Northumberland, Va., set a career high in scoring this past week and also helped lead the Blazers in a crucial victory over Capital Athletic Conference rival Wesley College while Dystant, from Odenton, Md., ran for a school record in the 800 meters at West Virginia University over the weekend.
Rich had a very good week for the blue-and-grey as he set a career-high of 28 points in a victory over Delaware Valley College in the beginning of the week. Rich scored nine points in a loss later in the week against Mary Washington however he came back with a huge game of 19 points and a key block that helped send the game into overtime. Rich has become a viable option for the Blazers down low in his senior campaign turning into one of the better big men in the conference.
The Blazers (11-6, 3-5 CAC) have three CAC games on the docket this week beginning with a home contest against Stevenson University Monday. Hood travels to St. Mary's College (Md.) Wednesday and York College (Pa.) Saturday.
Dystant ran for a school record in the 800 meters at the State Farm Games hosted by West Virginia University Saturday. Dystant's time of 2:29.62 easily eclipsed the previous school record and also has pushed her to the top of the Capital Athletic Conference rankings. Her 800 meter time is now the top mark in the conference, which is a very impressive feat for a freshman.
Dystant and the Blazers travel across I-70 to Hagerstown Community College Saturday for a 10 a.m. invitational.
