FREDERICK, Md.--Freshman sprinter Michael Beidleman of the men's track and field team and freshman forward Rachel Wiley of the women's basketball team have been chosen as the Hood College Athletes of the Week for the week ending Dec. 11.
Beidleman, who was also recognized by the Capital Athletic Conference with its weekly accolade, was Hood's top point scorer at the Dickinson Holiday Classic Saturday. The native of Washington, D.C., and product of Magruder High School won two gold medals in the 400 and 200 and finished third in the 55-meter dash in Hood's second indoor meet of the season. His time in the 55-meter dash was just 0.02 seconds off assistant coach and former all-CAC performer Ola Komolafe's school record time from the 2010-11 season.
The Blazers are idle until January 21 when Hood travels to Morgantown, W. Va., for the WVU State Farm Games.
Wiley averaged a "double double" and helped the Blazers secure their first victory of the season over Goucher College last week. The Frederick native averaged 11.3 points and 11.7 rebounds while shooting .542 from the floor in three games. In the win over the Gophers, Wiley finished with 15 points and a game- and career-high 16 rebounds in addition to recording three blocks. Then at Frostburg State University on Wednesday, Wiley tallied nine points and eight boards and rejected a season-high five Bobcat shot attempts. She rounded out the week with a 10-point, 11-rebound effort against St. Mary's College (Md.) at BB&T Arena. Wiley also recorded four more blocks and currently ranks 11th in NCAA Division III in that category, averaging 3.1 per contest.
Hood (1-8, 0-4 CAC) travels to Notre Dame (Md.) University for a 1 p.m. nonconference game Saturday.
