FREDERICK, Md.— Senior forward Lavar Rich of the men’s basketball team and junior guard Emily Maerz of the women’s basketball team have been named Hood College athletes of the week for the week ending Nov. 27.
Originally from Northumberland Va., Rich had a dominating performance for the Blazers in a thrilling 90-88 overtime victory over Eastern. Rich scored 24 points on 6-of-15 shooting, which shattered his career high of 16 earlier this season. He also hauled in eight rebounds including three offensive rebounds, which was a team high. His bread and butter for this game though came from the line where he converted 12-of-14 attempts, which was a season-high for attempted free throws and made free throws for any Blazer player. Rich continued his strong start to the season, as he is second on the team averaging 17.0 points and 6.3 rebounds per game.
Hood hosts Penn State Mont Alto Monday and has its first conference home game of the season on Wednesday against Salisbury at home.
Maerz, from Myersville Md., scored a team-high and season-high of 17 points in a 69-45 setback against Waynesburg this past week. Maerz went 5-of-7 from three, which tied her for third in the Hood record book for three point shooting percentage in a single game. She was the only one to score off the bench and is quickly becoming a quality sixth-player for the blue and grey.
The Blazers host Shenandoah for their first home contest of the year on Nov. 27. The Blazers follow that game up with its first two conference games of the year starting at home against Salisbury on Nov. 30 at 6 p.m. and at Wesley on Dec. 3 at 2 p.m.
