FREDERICK, Md.—Sophomore Stephen McNamara of the men's cross country team and junior midfielder Kristen Byers of the women's soccer team have been selected as the Hood College Athletes of the Week for the week ending Oct. 16.
McNamara, who came to Hood from Bayside, N.Y., tied for first place in Hood's home cross country invitational over the weekend. McNamara tied with fellow Hood runners Brett Shelley and Dan Jacobs with a time of 18:13 in the 5K race. It was the first race in McNamara’s career that he had won or tied for winning.
Hood hosts its second home meet of the season Saturday at Utica Park beginning at 11 a.m.
Byers, who is originally from Hagerstown, scored the game-winning goal for the Blazers in a 2-1 come from behind win over Capital Athletic Conference rival Wesley College on Saturday afternoon. Byers' tally with 50 seconds remaining in regulation was her second goal of the year and her first against a CAC opponent.
The victory propelled Hood (3-12, 2-5 CAC) back into the CAC playoff picture with a vital matchup at Mary Washington (7-4-2, 2-3-1 CAC) on Wednesday in Fredericksburg, Va.
