FREDERICK, Md.--Sophomore Kevin Baker of the men's golf team and senior goalkeeper Kirsten Cacciola of the women's soccer team have been selected as the Hood College Athletes of the Week for the week ending Oct. 9.
Baker, from Boyds, Md., fired a five-over-par 77 at the Lebanon Valley College Fall Invitational Monday, which is one stroke shy of tying the Hood school record for a single round. He finished tied for 16th out of 80 competitors and helped the Blazers post their best team score of the fall (338). At the completion of Hood's fall slate of tournaments, Baker owns the Blazers' lowest stroke average at 82.5.
Cacciola, from Cavetown, Md., racked up 33 saves in a pair of games last week. In Hood's first game of the week at Frostburg State University, Cacciola faced a barrage of Bobcat shots on goal, 20 in all, and turned away 16 of them, eclipsing her previous single-game career-high of 14 set against York College (Pa.) on Sept. 28. Then Saturday at Thomas Athletic Field, Cacciola helped the Blazers snap a 10-game losing skid and post their first Capital Athletic Conference victory of the season with her second shutout of the fall against the Marymount University (Va.) Saints. She was once again tested on numerous occasions but went a perfect 17-for-17, setting a new career-high for stops.
Cacciola currently leads the CAC in saves with 125 and is second in save percentage (.845) among the league's keepers.
The women's soccer team (2-10, 1-5 CAC) hosts McDaniel College Monday, travels to Goucher College Wednesday and hosts Wesley College in a CAC game Saturday.
