FREDERICK, Md.--Sophomore Dan Jacobs of the men's cross country team and first-year Gretchen Whitesell of the women's cross country team have been chosen as the Hood College Athletes of the Week for the week ending Oct. 2.
Jacobs and Whitesell were the first Blazer finishers to cross the tape in their respective races at the annual Don Cathcart Invitational hosted by Salisbury University Saturday.
Whitesell, from Myersville, Md., finished 41st of 144 competitors in 24:28, the eighth-fastest time in program history. Her time was nearly two minutes faster than her previous 6K mark set Sept. 18 at the University of Delaware and helped Hood shatter its previous team scoring time at this meet. Whitesell ran No. 1 for Hood for the first time in her collegiate career as the Blazers finished ninth in the team standings out of 16 teams.
Jacobs, from Hillsborough, N.J., led the way for the Hood men in a time of 27:20, good for 51st place of 159 participants. His time set a new record for sophomore men in the Hood record book. Jacobs was heralded as Hood's first all-Capital Athletic Conference runner last season and, like Whitesell, ran No. 1 for Hood for the first time this fall. Hood placed ninth in the team competition out of 14 teams.
The Blazer cross country teams are idle this week but will host races in each of the next two weeks. On Oct. 15, Hood hosts Gallaudet University, Mary Baldwin College and Marymount University for an on-campus 5K invitational. Then on Oct. 22, the Blazers will entertain a large open meet (6K/8K) at Utica Park in Thurmont.
