Frederick Md.—Junior goalkeeper and captain Will Lane of the men's soccer team and sophomore forward Rachel Gannon of the field hockey team have garnered Hood College athlete of the week honors for the week ending Sept. 18.
Lane, from nearby Walkersville, Md., has been impressive in goal for the Blazers this season and continued his hot streak last week. Lane notched a shutout against Capital Athletic Conference rival Wesley College Saturday. In a crucial game for both CAC teams, Lane contributed five saves on 24 shots and helped the Blazers get a point in a 0-0 double overtime tie. The shutout for Lane was his third of the season (second in his last three games) and eighth of his career. Lane has now only given up one goal in Hood's last 300 minutes of play. His fantastic start to the season has helped the Blazers start strong with a 3-1-1 record.
Gannon helped the Blazers obtain a 1-0 victory over St. Vincent College with the loan goal of the matchup. Gannon, a sophomore from Church Hill, Md., scored the game-winning goal in the 45th minute of play and helped the Blazers end a two-game losing skid and get back to the .500 mark on the season (2-2). The goal was Gannon's second of the season and fourth of her career.
Hood's men's soccer team hits the road on Wednesday traveling to McDaniel College for a 4:30 p.m. kickoff and also looks to protect its home pitch Saturday with a CAC matchup against instate rival St. Mary's College of Md. at 1 p.m.
The field hockey team continues its four-game road trip this week with two matchups against Bridgewater (Va.) and Notre Dame (Md.) on Sept. 21 and 23, respectively.
