FREDERICK, Md.--Junior forward Megan Cahill of the field hockey team and sophomore midfielder Eric Diehl of the men's soccer team have been selected as the first Hood College athletes of the week for the 2011-12 academic year.
Cahill, from Frederick, scored a pair of goals in the Blazers' season opening 5-1 victory at Bryan Mawr College. The effort marked the second multi-goal game of her Blazer career and gave Hood its first season-opening triumph since the 2005 campaign. Both of Cahill's scores came in the second half; she now has seven career goals in the blue-and-grey.
Diehl, from Gaithersburg, found the back of the net twice as well as he accounted for both Blazer scores in Hood's first two games of 2011. Diehl started the season on a high note when he booted home the golden goal with 27 seconds remaining in the second overtime period to give Hood its first-ever win over Goucher College, 1-0. Diehl then notched Hood's only tally against La Roche College Saturday in a 4-1 setback. He now has seven career goals in a Blazer uniform.
The field hockey team (1-0) will host its first home game of the fall Thursday against Goucher at 5 p.m. while the Hood men's soccer team (1-1) has a busy week ahead with three games on the schedule, beginning with a home tilt against Valley Forge Christian College Tuesday at 4 p.m.
