FREDERICK, Md.--Junior Emma Arneson of the women's track and field team and senior Ola Komolafe of the men's track and field team have been chosen as the Hood College Athletes of the Week for the week ending Dec. 5.
The duo had outstanding showings at Saturday's indoor meet at Dickinson College, representing the first official competition for Hood's indoor track and field team since it became a varsity sport this season. Hood's outdoor track and field program was elevated from a club team to varsity status in 2006-07.
Arneson, a team captain from Huntington, W.Va., finished sixth in the 55-meter hurdles and set a school record of 9.56 seconds, an improvement of 0.6 seconds. Arneson returned to tie Katie Thomas' school record in the 55-meter dash, set in 2008, ran the opening leg on the record-setting 4 x 200 meter relay which finished fourth and contributed a leg on the sixth-place 4 x 400 meter relay.
Komolafe, who hails from Lanham, Md., jetted out of the blocks to win the men's 55-meter dash in a solid time of 6.62 seconds which broke his own school record. Komolafe returned later in the program to capture the 200 meters in a time of 23.84 on Dickinson's tight oval and contributed the 400 leg on the Blazers' third-place distance medley relay.
A two-time all-CAC performer, Komolafe is Hood's school record holder in the 100, 200 and 400.
The Blazers will be idle until Jan. 22, 2011 when Hood travels to West Virginia University for an indoor meet.
