FREDERICK, Md.--Sophomore defender/midfielder Miriah Stone of the field hockey team and sophomore goalkeeper Will Lane of the men's soccer team have been selected as the female and male Hood College Athletes of the Week for the week ending Oct. 10.
Stone scored one goal in each of Hood's three games last week. The native of Thurmont, Md., registered her first collegiate goal against Shenandoah University just 1:19 into the second half to give the Blazers a 2-0 edge. She then contributed one of five second-half goals by the Blazers in a 6-0 drubbing of the College of Notre Dame (Md.) on Thursday. Stone wrapped up the week by knocking in Hood's lone score against Wells College on Saturday in a 2-1 defeat.
Stone is one of four Blazers to start all 12 games this season and vaulted into second place on the Blazers' scoring chart with six points. The field hockey team (2-10, 0-5 CAC) wraps up its home slate Wednesday against nationally ranked Salisbury University at 4 p.m.
Lane earns his second weekly honor of the season after helping the Blazer men stretch their winning streak to four in a row with a pair of victories over Mt. Aloysius College and Capital Athletic Conference rival Wesley College. A native of Walkersville, Md., Lane racked up a season-best 13 saves, one shy of his career-high, in Hood's dramatic 3-2 overtime win over the Wolverines at home on Saturday. He turned aside two key attempts in the overtime period and helped the Blazers defeat Wesley for the first time in program history. Hood has now earned two CAC victories for the first time since joining the league in 2006 and is currently in fourth place in the conference standings.
Lane has started 10 games in the net for the Blazers and leads the CAC in saves with 55. He is 6-4 on the season and owns an .809 save percentage with three shutouts.
The Blazer men's soccer team (6-5, 2-2 CAC) will try to keep its hot streak going Wednesday when Hood travels to St. Mary's College (Md.) for a 4 p.m. CAC matchup with the Seahawks.
