FREDERICK, Md.--Senior captain Kristina Straub of the volleyball team has been selected as the Hood College athlete of the week for the week ending Sept. 19.
Straub was a key offensive threat in a 2-1 week for Hood. The native of Burtonsville, Md., started all three matches and racked up 20 kills and 12 aces for the Blazers. She also owned a .250 hitting percentage and collected 16 digs on the week. Her 10 aces against Christendom matched her career-high and also rank fourth all-time on Hood's single-match list.
The Blazers started the week with a 3-0 sweep over Trinity University (D.C.), a team Hood has yet to surrender a set to in 15 meetings. After suffering a tough 3-0 setback to the York College (Pa.) Spartans in their Capital Athletic Conference opener Wednesday, the Blazers got back on track with another 3-0 sweep over visiting Christendom College.
Straub continues to move up the Blazer statistical charts in several categories. She is currently eighth all-time in kills with 313 and is just one service ace away from tying Jessica Lertora '04 for 10th all-time. Lertora amassed 101 aces in her four-year career in the blue-and-grey.
After serving as the team's primary setter her first two seasons, Straub has emerged as a solid hitter as an upperclassman. She led the team in assists as a freshman and sophomore and ranks fourth all-time with 586. Straub finished her junior campaign as the team leader in kills (119) and blocks (33). Through Hood's first eight matches, Straub ranks second on the team in kills (46) and third in aces (18) and digs (72).
Straub and the Blazers (4-4, 0-1 CAC) have a pair of road matches slated for this week. Hood travels to CAC foe Mary Washington Tuesday before hitting the road for Dickinson College Thursday. Both matches begin at 7 p.m.
