FREDERICK, Md.--Senior Sofi Lazar of the men's lacrosse team and freshman Brittni Jones of the softball team share the Hood College Athlete of the Week award for the week ending March 21.
Lazar, a midfielder from South Kingston, R.I., became Hood's career leader in goals Wednesday with a pair of scores in a 9-3 Blazer win over Randolph College. Lazar surpassed former teammate Jason Anderson '08 for the all-time lead, now with 46. Anderson's total stood at 44 during his four-year career. Lazar has scored at least one goal in five of the seven games he has played this spring and is tied for sixth on the team in points with 10 (seven goals, three assists).
Hood (5-3) opens Capital Athletic Conference action Wednesday at York College (Pa.) (3-5). Face-off is slated for 3:30 p.m.
Jones helped the Blazers post a 5-5 record on their spring break trip to Kissimmee, Fla. A starter behind the plate in all 10 games, the native of Drakes Branch, Va., batted a team-best .344 with 11 base hits, including three doubles and a triple. Jones also drove in four runs and scored seven times. She stepped up defensively as well, throwing out 10 baserunners. One of three Blazers to start all 12 games so far, Jones is currently the only Blazer to boast over a .300 batting average (.316) for the season and leads the squad in hits (12), runs scored (8) and doubles (3).
Hood (5-7), which had its home doubleheader with Wilson College postponed Monday, looks to snap a four-game skid Thursday at Frostburg State University (5-7). First pitch of the nonconference twinbill is 3 p.m.
