FREDERICK, Md.--Sophomore Brenden Straughn of the men's basketball team has been named the Hood College Athlete of the Week for the week ending Nov. 22.
Straughn helped the Blazers to a runner-up finish in the 2009 Pride of Maryland Tournament Championship presented by M&T Bank. The sophomore guard from New Carrollton, Md., started all three games at the point for Hood and averaged 10.7 points, 3.3 steals and 3.3 assists. Straughn, along with classmate Tory Wilson, represented Hood on the Pride of Maryland all-tournament team.
In Hood's opener against Washington College Friday at the Odom Fitness Center at Fort Detrick, Straughn tied for team-high scoring honors with 12 points to go along with four steals, three rebounds and two assists in 38 minutes of work to propel Hood into the winner's bracket of the tournament.
Then Saturday against Johns Hopkins University, Straughn turned in another solid all-around effort with nine points, three rebounds, four steals and a season-high six assists in a 65-62 Hood victory. As a result, the Blazers earned their second trip to the title game in three years.
In Sunday's championship game against St. Mary's College (Md.), Straughn dropped in 11 points, including a pair of three-pointers, in addition to dishing out two assists and picking off two more steals.
Hood (2-1) returns to action following the Thanksgiving holiday at the Carnegie Mellon Tournament, which begins Saturday. The Blazers square off against Manhattanville College at 1 p.m. in the first round.
