Sgro Cops All-Conference Honors Again, Women Take Fourth at CACs

Sarah Morris
FREDERICKSBURG, Va.--Senior Danielle Sgro paced the Hood College women's cross country team to a fourth place finish at the Capital Athletic Conference championships hosted by the University of Mary Washington Saturday.
Sgro secured her second all-CAC cross country designation and third all-CAC honor counting track by finishing in 13th place (25:24.10).
"I can’t say enough about the effort put forward by the
women’s team today," said head coach Brent Ayer. "They really
went after it hard. Four of our six runners set personal records on
a tough course, one more narrowly missed, and the other runner
brought home an all-CAC certificate for the third time in her
career."
The Hood women were edged out of third by a 93 to 111 score. "We
were almost 40 places down at the mile mark and closed to within
18," said Ayer. "We have started to close the gap on the next tier
in the conference."
Freshman Sarah Morris placed 25th in 27:02, a personal best by 51 seconds on the tough, rolling course. She was followed by junior Jess Stanley in 27th in 27:08, freshman Maria Moss 29th in 27:14 (a personal best by 28 seconds), and sophomore Sam Smith rounded out the Blazer scoring in 37th place in 29:41 (a personal best by 32 seconds). Senior Kelly Keyser finished in 43rd place running 31:28, a personal best of 49 seconds.
"Danielle tweaked her hamstring on Thursday and it was bothering her today," said Ayer. "It speaks volumes about the progress she has made when she can have a bad day and still make all-conference."
Mary Washington's Hayley Sullivan took medalist honors with a clocking of 22:53.30, but Salisbury University edged the host Eagles in the team competition by two points (33 to 35).
