Sgro, Shoai Medal at Green Terror Challenge
WESTMINSTER, Md.--Daniel Sgro and Faraz Shoai medaled to pace the Hood College cross country teams McDaniel College Green Terror Challenge this past Saturday.
Sgro, a sophomore from Indiana, Pa., placed 14th overall for the Blazer women, who finished sixth as a team.
Shoai, a local product of Governor Thomas Johnson High School and Frederick Community College, finished 24th overall for the seventh-place Blazer men.
The top 25 in each division were given awards.
Scoring for Hood were senior Rachel Pectol (44th), April Penn (47th), senior Julia Blickenstaff (49th) and Sara Stiles (62nd).
Completing the team effort for the men were freshman William Andrews (26th), freshman Blair Ames (44th), freshman Blake Rust (50th) and junior Steve Delaney (59th).
Shoai and Andrews ran the sixth and seventh fastest times in the brief three-year history of cross country at Hood College on a difficult McDaniel Course.
"Because we have so many freshmen and first-time college runners, we will be using the first five meets to focus on learning to run a disciplined race," head coach Brent Ayer said. "I thought Faraz and William ran very well today. Both picked up over 30 places after the mile mark. William is figuring out the longer college distance very quickly.
"Blair did a fine job as well, setting a new personal record and running down 17 runners after the mile," Ayer said. "For the women, Julia had the greatest number of 'pickups' from the mile mark, running down 10 competitors. Danielle is running with people she didn't dream of catching last season."
Nine area colleges participated in the meet, with Gettysburg capturing both the women's and men's team titles.
