Volleyball Wraps Up Play at Cougar Classic

UNION, N.J. - The Hood College volleyball team pushed NYU to five sets but came away with losses to the and Plattsburg St. on the final day of the Cougar Classic at Kean University. 

Set Scores

  • Against NYU: 25-7, 25-18, 26-28, 20-25, 15-9. 
  • Against Plattsburgh: 25-17, 25-23, 25-18.

Inside the Box Score

  • Kari Betson had 23 kills total to lead the Blazers. She added 30 total digs. 
  • Elena Zinaich notched 22 kills and four blocks on the afternoon. She was named to the all-tournament team. 
  • Payton Belella dished out 54 assists and had 23 digs. 
  • Renee Reus picked up a career-high 20 digs against NYU and ended the day with 30 total. 

How it Happened - NYU

  • The Violets used a 16-1 run in the first set to take control of the match and eventually went ahead two sets to none. 
  • Hood faced match point twice in the third set. After the second match point made it 26-25 in favor of NYU, three straight points by the Blazers gave Hood its first set of the day. 
  • The Blazers used a 7-2 run in set four to take an 18-10 lead after an ace by Reus and went on to win 25-20, forcing a fifth set. 
  • The Violets scored the first five points of the decisive set and never looked back. 
  • Caroline Rapp led NYU with 15 kills and had just one error. Kathryn Goyette dished out 39 assists. 

How it Happened - Plattsburgh

  • Hood nearly pulled off an improbable comeback in the second set. Trailing 15-2, the Blazers caught fire and went on a 16-2 run. A kill by Zinaich finished the run and gave Hood an 18-17 lead. 
  • Plattsburgh held off the hard-charging Blazers for a 25-23 win and went on to take the third set and the match. 
  • Lexi Pascal had nine kills for Plattsburgh and Bryanne Yasui added 17 digs.
