Bussey Recognized for Athletic and Academic Excellence

FREDERICK, Md.--Senior libero Jamie Bussey of the Hood College volleyball team has been named to the 2007 ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District II Third Team as selected by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Bussey, a starter in 26 of Hood's 27 matches this season, led the Blazer defense and ranked fifth in the Capital Athletic Conference in digs per game (4.76). A two-time team captain, she became the second player in Hood volleyball history to record 1,000 career digs this season. A native of Newburg, Md., Bussey is also the school record holder in digs in a single match with 39 against Shenandoah Oct. 6.

A two-sport athlete at Hood, Bussey also played softball for three seasons in the blue and gray. As a sophomore and junior, Bussey garnered Academic All-District honors during the spring seasons.

Bussey is a member of the Dean's List and this spring will graduate with a double major in English and communications with a concentration in journalism. At Hood's honors convocation last spring, she received two prestigious awards. She was honored with the Blue and Grey Editorial Award, presented for the best editorial writing appearing in Blue & Grey Today, formerly Hood Today, in the past academic year. Bussey was also bestowed the George E. Randall Award, presented to a junior or senior who has demonstrated excellence in journalism or writing, has worked on student publications and has maintained a strong grade point average.

Bussey keeps a busy extra-curricular schedule as well, serving as editor of the Blue and Grey Today, in addition to a work-study position in the sports information office and serving as a stringer for the Frederick News-Post. This year she is interning at National Geographic Magazine and was recently accepted to serve in the Peace Corps in fall 2008.

Student-athletes selected to the Academic All-District teams must have achieved at least sophomore academic standing, maintained a minimum 3.2 cumulative GPA and be a significant contributor to their team.
