Volleyball's Nagy Tabbed First Team All-Conference
FREDERICK, Md.--Junior outside hitter Lindsey Nagy was named to the Atlantic Women's Colleges Conference first team and five other Blazers earned honorable mention recognition as announced by the conference office Monday.
With its six selections, Hood placed the most players of the five AWCC schools on the all-conference squad; Mary Baldwin had five players selected while Notre Dame, Chatham and Trinity each had three players represented.
A native of Torrance, Calif., Nagy picks up her third all-conference selection and second consecutive nod to the first team. She earned honorable mention notice as a freshman. A starter in all 21 matches for the Blazers, Nagy racked up 173 kills and 213 digs this fall and led Hood to the championship match of the AWCC tournament. She was ranked among the league leaders in numerous categories, including hitting percentage (.234, second), kills per game (2.31, fourth), digs per game (2.84, 10th) and service aces per game (0.57, second). She also contributed 14 blocks and seven assists this fall.
Hood also had five players who garnered honorable mention honors. Senior Starr McDavid and juniors Ashley Bryan, Jamie Bussey, Hilary Cook and Caroline Woodhams were among the 15 honorable mention selections.
Bryan, who earns her first citation by the league, was second on the squad in kills with 128 and paced the Blazers with 46 blocks, ranking her ninth in the AWCC. She also tallied 53 digs, 15 aces and 26 assists.
Bussey, a two-time all-league performer in softball, earns her first certificate for her performance on the volleyball court. Hood's starting libero in all 21 matches, Bussey listed second in the league in digs with 294 (3.97 per game). That single-season mark also ranks fifth all-time in the Hood annals.
Cook earns her first all-league honor after a solid all-around effort in 2006. In 60 games, she tallied 57 kills, 36 digs, 27 blocks and eight aces.
McDavid caps her Hood career with her first all-conference award. She appeared in 64 games and racked up 53 kills, 133 digs and 30 service aces.
Woodhams is also a three-time all-league honoree, having garnered second-team citations in her first two seasons at Hood. The starting setter listed fourth in the league in assists (4.71). Her 339 assists on the season rank seventh all-time at the college. She also totaled 66 kills, 129 digs, 37 service aces and nine blocks.
Chatham's Chelsea Viti was tabbed the leagueýs "Most Outstanding Player", Mary Baldwin's Colena Roberts was chosen as the "Newcomer of the Year" and Trinity's Elizabeth Schreiner earned "Coach of the Year" honors.
The Blazers finished the 2006 campaign with a record of 6-15 and advanced to the championship match of the AWCC tournament.
