Solid Serving Helps Volleyball Sweep Tri-Match
WASHINGTON, D.C.--The Hood College volleyball team used brilliant serving to sweep a tri-match from Trinity University (30-18, 30-19, 30-11) and Salem College (30-19, 30-16, 30-12) Saturday afternoon in Washington, D.C. The victory over Trinity assured the Blazers of a spot in the Atlantic Women's Colleges Conference tournament on Nov. 4. Hood is now 5-11 overall and 3-4 in the league.
In the first match against the Tigers, senior Starr McDavid was one kill away from recording a "double-double" as she finished with nine kills and 11 digs. Freshman Ashley Burns registered a team-high seven service aces to go along with eight digs and three kills. Junior Jamie Bussey tallied a match-high 16 digs and classmate Caroline Woodhams set up 10 kills and totaled seven digs with three aces.
The Blazers won their third match in a row with a 3-0 sweep over non-conference rival Salem. Hood racked up 21 service aces in the match to go along with 29 kills. Junior Lindsey Nagy and McDavid each recorded seven aces against the Spirits. Nagy also had eight digs and a team-high nine kills. McDavid finished one dig shy of her season-high with 19, while freshman Leah Garland tallied nine assists, six digs and a pair of aces. Junior Hilary Cook finished with five kills and junior Ashley Bryan put down three kills and had nine digs.
Hood returns to action Tuesday hosting AWCC leader Mary Baldwin College at 7 p.m. The Blazers will also recognize their lone graduating senior, Starr McDavid, before the match.
