Hood Track & Field Makes Indoor Debut at Christopher Newport

NEWPORT NEWS, Va.--The Hood College men’s and women’s track team competed in the first official indoor track competition in the school’s history on Friday and Saturday at Christopher Newport University.

Despite only having three days of practice for the event and facing some Division I competition, the team had an impressive showing. Freshman Justin Everett broke the school record in the high jump with a leap of 5’ 5” despite not being able to practice before the event. Everett also competed in the triple jump (37’ 3”) and in the long jump (18’ 10¾”) and was a member of the 4x200 meter relay team.

Sophomore Mike Cahill was Hood’s top performer in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.59 seconds and led the 4x200 meter relay team to a time of 1:41.15. Cahill also finished the 400-meter dash with a time of 55.29 seconds and the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.59 seconds.

Senior Ryan Jenkins and sophomore David Frazier, who also ran with the 4x200 relay team, finished the 60-meter dash with times of 7.95 and 8.02 seconds, respectively. Frazier and Jenkins also competed in the 200-meter dash, finishing with times of 25.49 and 25.97, respectively.

Juniors Faizal Johnson and Tomilayo Komolafe finished the 60-meter dash with times of 7.79 seconds and 7.81 seconds respectively. Komolafe also competed in the 600-meter run, finishing with a time of 1:37.38 and ran the 200-meter dash in 25.11.

The distance medley team of Blair Ames, William Andrews, Steve Delaney and Brendan Greenlees was the only squad to contest the event and finished with a time of 12:42.56. Andrews also competed in the one mile run, finishing with a time of 5:04.33. Delaney finished the 1000-meter run with a time of 3:08.68. Greenlees finished the 3000-meter run with a time of 10:34.75.

Katie Thomas was Hood’s top female performer, finishing the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 10.98 seconds, the 60-meter dash with a time of 9.11 seconds, the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:09.53 and the 200-meter dash with a time of 30.09 seconds.

Junior Amanda Kwiatkowski clocked a time of 12.66 in the 60-meter hurdles and ran the 200-meter dash in 34.69.

Because this was Hood’s first official indoor competition, all top times set new school records in their respective events.

The track team will be in competition again on February 2nd in Collegeville, Pennsylvania for the Frank Colden Invitational.
