Track Club Ends Season With Record-Setting Efforts at Goucher

TOWSON, Md.--The Hood College track club closed out its third season of competition in an unscored triangular meet hosted by Goucher College May 6. York College also participated.

Katie Thomas led the Blazers' efforts by setting two school records in winning the 400-meter dash and placing third in the 100. Other wins were posted by Rachel Pectol (women's steeplechase), Steve Delaney (men's steeplechase) and Mark MacKenzie (discus).

Faraz Shoai lowered his school record on the way to finishing second in the men's 5,000 in 17:09.64. MacKenzie established a new Hood standard of 89-4 while finishing seventh in the men's hammer throw. Pectol's winning mark in the steeplechase represented the first time a Hood woman has contested the event and gave the program its sixth school record of the day.

Others participating in the final competition were April Penn (second in the 5000), Tomilayo Komolafe (third in the long jump, fourth in the 400 and fifth in the 200) and Terrence Sullivan (sixth in the javelin).

On the season, the Hood track club established 16 school records, led by Thomas' five women's marks. Ryan Jenkins established a new men's record in the 400 and had a hand in two relay records. Shoai set new standards in the 5,000 and the steeplechase and Delaney lowered his 1,500 record time and helped with the new 4x400 standard.

"I am very pleased with the progress of the program this year," head coach Brent Ayer said. "By far, we had our greatest number of participants. We were able to contest several events that we had left dormant in the past. And young runners like Katie, Faraz, Tomi and Steve gained significant experience and made great progress.

"I would like to thank [assistant] coach [Barbara] Leishman and [assistant] coach [Scott] Rippeon for their contributions. Having their competitive and coaching backgrounds is a real selling point for the program."
