Blazer Women Advance to CAC Semifinals

FREDERICK, Md.--The Hood College women's tennis team (8-9) won its seventh consecutive match Saturday afternoon, defeating the Wesley College Wolverines (4-5) by an 8-1 margin in the first round of the Capital Athletic Conference tournament at Baker Park.

The fourth-seeded Blazers will now travel to face the top-seeded University of Mary Washington Eagles in Fredericksburg early next week.

Hood upped its all-time record against Wesley to 5-0 dating back to the 1997-98 season.

The Blazers went 3-0 in doubles play and won five of six singles matches to clinch the victory.

The first doubles team of Jillian Elkaim and Emily Schrodel downed Becca Pennington and Marina Palma, 8-6. Danielle Hunt and Emily Maerz rolled over Kori Isken and Stephanie Bently, 8-2, at No. 2, and the third doubles tandem of Casey Miller and Kameran Evans upended Caitlin Grinstead and Julia Wright, 8-5.

Elkaim, Maerz, Miller and Emily Schrodel all registered straight set victories in their singles matches. Laura Saad came away with the win at No. 3 after her opponent, Bentley, retired in the second set. Hunt suffered a heartbreaking 7-6 (7-2), 2-6, 7-10 defeat at fourth singles.

The date and time of Hood's semifinal matchup with UMW have yet to be determined.
