Fifth-Seeded Seahawks Top Fourth-Seeded Blazers in CAC First Round

Christine Ocampos-Barry and Caitlin Erickson

FREDERICK, Md.--The No. 5 seed St. Mary's College (Md.) Seahawks (12-7) won five of six singles matches to clinch a 6-3 victory over No. 4 Hood College (10-10) Sunday in the first round of the Capital Athletic Conference women's tennis tournament at the Baker Park Tennis Courts.

Hood grabbed a 2-1 lead after doubles action as the Blazers' first and third tandems were victorious. Jillian Elkaim and Emily Schrodel teamed up to defeat Sarah Weisse and Michelle Compton, 8-6, while Caitlin Erickson and Laura Saad knocked off Jerilyn Rugalski and Jackie Brady, 8-4.

But in singles play, Elkaim was Hood's only victor, ousting Weisse at the No. 1 spot, 6-1, 6-1, for her 15th win of the season. Christine Ocampos-Barry suffered a tough loss to Compton at second singles, 6-2, 3-6, 6-2, and Saad gave O'Neill all she could handle at the No. 5 position, falling 6-4, 6-4.

Erickson hung tough with Monica Powell at No. 3, dropping the first set 7-5, but Powell came back to take the second set, 6-0. Dani Hunt and Schrodel came up short at fourth and sixth singles, respectively. Rugalski defeated Hunt, 6-2, 6-2, and Kathleen Ramsey topped Schrodel, 6-2, 6-1.

St. Mary's advances to the semifinals at top-seeded University of Mary Washington Tuesday.
