Women's Tennis Places Second at AWCC Championships
FREDERICK, Md.--Hood College's unprecedented streak of six straight Atlantic Women's Colleges Conference tennis titles came to an end Sunday as the Blazers finished second behind College of Notre Dame (Md.) at the 2006 AWCC Championships.
Notre Dame compiled 48 points on the strength of four singles titles and two doubles crowns. The Gators were bolstered by three runner-up finishes.
Hood finished second with 38 points thanks to three titles, four runner-up showings and two consolation championships.
Trinity took third with 11 points, while Chatham and Wilson tied for fourth with 10 points.
Despite advancing to the finals in seven of the nine flights, Hood's impressive run came to a halt.
Sophomore Laura Wanner repeated as the No. 4 singles champion as she upset top-seeded Roxanna Beyranvand 6-1, 6-3.
Junior Stephanie Cowen took home the No. 6 singles crown by sweeping Notre Dame's Alli Phillips 6-4, 6-0. Cowen was the runner-up at the same flight last year.
Garrett and Cowen teamed for the title at No. 3 doubles, downing Marie Claire Santiago and Allison Najewicz of Notre Dame by a 10-4 margin.
The Blazers received runner-up singles finishes from sophomore Stephanie Garrett (No. 2), freshman Larisa Buriak (No. 3) and freshman Christina Rosa (No. 5). Buriak and fellow freshman Christine Ocampos-Barry took second at No. 2 doubles, dropping a narrow 10-8 decision to Notre Dame's Monica Cherry and Beyranvand.
Ocampos-Barry (No. 1 singles) and the duo of Rosa and Wanner (No. 1 doubles) captured consolation championships.
