Blazers Stay in Fifth After Day Two of CAC Championships

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md.--The Hood College women's swim team remained in fifth place in the team standings after two days of competition at the 2008 Capital Athletic Conference championships at St. Mary's College (Md.) Saturday.
Freshman Kim Wolfgang won the consolation final in the 100 back with a clocking of 1:05.09 to pace the Blazers. Three Hood swimmers qualified for the evening finals in the 400 individual medley. Erica Hamor was second in the consolation heat (5:09.48), while Amy Kaufman and Kim Wolfgang reached the championship final. Kaufman was fifth in 5:00.91 and Wolfgang placed eighth in 5:09.43. Ashley Garyn came in eighth in the consolation heat of the 200 free in 2:11.50 to round out Hood's individual performances.
The Blazers also swam a pair of relays. The 800 free relay squad of Kaufman, Hamor, Garyn and Katie Hitchens came in sixth in 8:33.07, narrowly missing lowering the school record by less than a second. The 200 medley relay team of Katie Reichard, Meaghan Verleysen, Garyn and Melissa Masino also placed sixth with a clocking of 2:19.42.
Hood enters the final day of competition at the championship meet in fifth place with 174 points, outdistancing York College (Pa.) and Gallaudet University. Preliminary action gets underway at 10 a.m. Sunday and the finals will begin at 6 p.m.
