Hitchens Doubles in Loss to Marymount

FREDERICK, Md.--Senior Katie Hitchens of the Hood College women's swim team won both the 50 and 100 freestyles in a 108-85 loss to the visiting Marymount University Saints Wednesday in the season opener for both schools.
Hitchens touched out Amanda Sperling in the 100 by .09 of a second in 58.31 and combined with newcomer Leah Chomlek to go 1-2 in the 50 in 25.14. Chomlek touched the wall in 29.19 in the 50 free and placed fifth in the 100 breast in 1:25.96 in her first collegiate meet.
Senior Amy Kaufman won the 500 free in 5:44.68 and Erica Hamor placed second in 6:09.57. Kaufman also finished second in the 1000 free (11:44.10) by just .22 of a second.
In her first meet back after missing the entire 2006-07 campaign due to injury, senior Lenore Brown took fourth in the 200 free (2:11.89) and the 100 breast (1:20.22) and swam the breaststroke leg of the 200 medley relay (2:01.39). Ashley Garyn led off the victorious 200 free relay (1:55.06) and was fourth in the 100 free (1:02.15).
Several swimmers made their Hood debuts Wednesday, including Kim Wolfgang, Kristen Kucharski, Meaghan Verleysen, Melissa Masino and Raven Jones. Wolfgang led off the second-place 200 medley relay, took fourth in the 200 individual medley (2:27.82) and second in the 100 back (1:04.69). Kucharski swam the butterfly leg of the 200 medley relay, took third in the 100 fly (1:13.92) and anchored the 200 free relay (1:55.06). Verleysen finished fifth in the 100 back (1:20.17) and sixth in the 200 individual medley (2:57.44); Masino placed third in the 1000 free (15:02.91); and Jones came in fifth in the 50 free (32.99) and sixth in the 100 free (1:25.57).
The Blazers return to action Saturday hosting the York College Spartans in a CAC meet at 2 p.m. at the Hood Aquatics Center.
