Women's Swimming Wins Second Straight AWCC Championship
PITTSBURGH--The Hood College women's swimming team won seven of
eight events on the second day of the 2006 Atlantic Women's
Colleges Conference Championships Sunday at Chatham College to seal
its second straight league title and third crown in the last four
years.
The Blazers, who swept all nine events on Saturday, set an AWCC
Championships record with 276 points. Hood outdistanced runner-up
College of Notre Dame, which had 203 points. Wells was third with
91 points, followed by Mary Baldwin with 84 and Chatham with
67.
"Our women were awesome this weekend," Hood head coach Don Feinberg
said. "They really stepped up and did surprisingly better than I
thought they would. Winning 16 of 17 events at the AWCC
Championships is unprecedented and an impressive accomplishment
considering we weren't fully rested."
Hood began Sunday's action by winning the 400-yard medley relay.
Sophomore Lenore Brown, freshman Kara Cruice, sophomore Amy Kaufman
and freshman Ashley Garyn teamed to finish in 4:37.72.
Freshman Sarah Haney capped her outstanding championship weekend by
winning the 100-yard freestyle (1:00.02) and the 100-yard butterfly
(1:07.72). She also set a personal best in the 200-yard
breaststroke, finishing second by just 1.8 seconds.
Brown won the 200-yard backstroke in a pool record time of 2:22.94
and won a second straight title in the 200-yard individual medley
in 2:26.15.
Kaufman defended her AWCC crown in the 1,000-yard freestyle with a
season-best time of 11:21.31, while freshman Danielle Sgro was
second in the event.
Hood put the finishes touches on its title by capturing the
400-yard freestyle relay. Kaufman, Garyn, sophomore Chloe Gandy and
Hitchens posted a winning time of 4:06.76.
For the weekend, Kaufman and Brown each won four individual events
and were on three winning relay teams. Haney won four individual
titles as well and swam on two championship relay teams. Hitchens
won one individual crown and was on three winning relays.
Event winners earned first-team All-AWCC honors, runners-up took
second-team honors and third-place finishers garnered honorable
mention accolades. In total, 12 Hood athletes combined for 35
All-AWCC awards.
