In her inaugural season as head coach, Jen Wood led the Blazers to a winning season -- the second in the program's history. Wood coached the Blazers to a second place finish in both regular season play and the Atlantic Women's Colleges Conference playoffs. The Blazers advanced to the championship game but came up just short to the College of Notre Dame (Md.), falling 3-2 on penalty kicks. The success of the team led to eight selections to AWCC all-conference teams, the most ever in the program's history.
In 2007, Wood built on that success as the Blazers entered the first year of Capital Athletic Conference play. After a rough start to the campaign during which the Blazers were held scoreless for the first six games of the season, Hood erupted for nine goals in a 9-0 rout of former AWCC rival Wilson College. The Blazers went on to win six of their final 11 games and finished 7-11 overall and 3-5 in the CAC. Hood also qualified for the CAC tournament as the No. 6 seed but fell 3-0 to the University of Mary Washington in the quarterfinals.
Last season, the Blazers posted a record of 10-8-2 and went 3-5 against CAC foes. Nine of Hood's 10 wins came via shutout and the Blazers earned their first CAC tournament win when they defeated Stevenson University 3-1 on penalty kicks. The women's soccer team became the first women's program to win a CAC tournament game. Additionally, freshman Jen Fischer earned a spot on the all-CAC second team.
Coming to Hood as an accomplished coach with experience at the club, high school and college levels, Wood was named head coach of the Hood College women's soccer program in January 2006.
Wood has previously served as an assistant coach at Shenandoah University and as the head coach at James Wood High School and Shepherd University. She is currently a coach with FC Frederick Soccer Club and is in her sixth year as a physical education teacher at Windsor Knolls Middle School in nearby Ijamsville.
Wood enjoyed a standout playing career at Shenandoah University, where she scored 24 goals and added 22 assists. She ranks third on the school's all-time scoring list with 70 points, and she is third in assists and fourth in goals. She was an All-Dixie Conference pick as a senior.
After earning her bachelor's of science degree in physical education in 1994, Wood served one year as an assistant coach at her alma mater before moving to James Wood High School in Winchester, Va., where she served as the head coach for two seasons.
In 1997, Wood became the first-ever head coach of the women's soccer program at NCAA Division II Shepherd (W.Va.) University. She led the team through two seasons at the club level as well as its first year as a varsity sport.
Wood, who earned a master's in education from the University of Phoenix in 2005, holds a national soccer coaching license from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. She and her husband, Paul, live in Hagerstown, Md. They have three children, Billy, Owen and Maddox.
