Jordan's Second-Half Goal Sends Hood to Historic Victory

FREDERICK, Md.--Freshman Cara Jordan scored her third goal of the season in the 67th minute and it proved to be all the Hood College women's soccer team (3-8, 1-3 CAC) would need to record its first-ever Capital Athletic Conference victory, 1-0, over visiting Villa Julie College (6-5, 2-2 CAC) Thursday at Thomas Athletic Field.

Villa Julie outshot Hood 21-11 on the day and the Mustangs were awarded 11 corner kicks to Hood's one.

Sophomore Nikki Antalffy had a scoring chance denied when Mustang keeper Casey Brown made a diving save to her left in the 60th minute.

But despite the disparity in shots and corners, Jordan made one of her team-leading six shots count seven minutes later when she scored the first-ever tally by a Blazer women's soccer player in CAC play. The native of Smithsburg, Md., blasted a shot from 12 yards out which Brown appeared to save, but the ball deflected off her gloves and trickled into the net.

The Mustangs nearly knotted the score in the 69th minute when Rose Phelan booted a corner kick into the box. After a scramble for control, Lauren Healy sent the ball to the right corner of the net but sophomore Laura Hines was in perfect position to reject the shot and deny Villa Julie the equalizer.

Villa Julie had one last attempt in the final minute but an indirect kick by Laura Robinson sailed high over the goal and the Blazers hung on for the hard-fought victory.

Freshman netminder Rachelle Buhrman turned away nine shots in the contest and recorded her third shutout of the season. In fact, all three of Hood's victories this season have come via the shutout.

Brown tallied five saves in the losing cause.

The Blazers look to make it three in a row Saturday at CAC foe Gallaudet University at 1 p.m.
