Eight Women's Soccer Players Earn All-AWCC Accolades

FREDERICK, Md.--Eight members of the Hood College women's soccer team were recognized by the Atlantic Women's Colleges Conference Monday for their outstanding performances during the 2006 season.

Hood's eight selections to the all-league teams are the most ever garnered by a Blazer women's soccer squad.

Senior Tamara Maggard and freshmen Whitney Boyer and Nina Duron were named to the all-league first team, sophomore Liz Rakowski and freshmen Brittany Hurt and Laura Hines earned second-team recognition and freshmen Nicole Antalffy and Colleen Cruice garnered honorable mention honors. In addition, Duron was chosen as the AWCC "Newcomer of the Year."

Maggard earns her fourth consecutive all-league certificate and her first nod to the first team. She earned second team accolades as a sophomore and honorable mention awards as a freshman and junior. This season she tied for second on the squad in points with 10 on three goals and four assists. and tallied the game-winner against Wells on Sept. 9 and Goucher on Oct. 5. For her career, the Baltimore native has 17 goals and 14 assists.

Boyer's sensational rookie season was cut short due to injury, but nevertheless she managed to lead the team in scoring with 21 points on 10 goals and one assist. Her 10 goals are the fourth-highest single season total in Hood women's soccer history.

Boyer, a product of nearby Middletown High School, notched game-winning goals against Trinity on Sept. 21 and Shenandoah on Oct. 11.

Duron also had a phenomenal campaign in the net for the Blazers, starting all 18 games and recording nine shutouts en route to a remarkable 10-5-3 record. She led the AWCC in goals-against average (1.35) and was second in save percentage (.806). She also racked up 104 saves on the season and allowed only 25 goals.

Rakowski earns her second straight selection to the all-league second team. A starter in 16 games, she finished the season with four goals and one assist for nine points. The Baltimore native also recorded the game-winning tally in a 4-1 win over AWCC foe Mary Baldwin on Oct. 13.

Hurt, Hines, Antalffy and Cruice were also solid contributors in their first collegiate seasons at Hood. Hurt, a native of Waldorf, Md., scored a pair of goals and assisted on another for five points. Hines, who hails from Monrovia, Md., also tallied two goals and appeared in all 18 games this fall.

Antalffy, a product of Sparrows Point High School in Baltimore, was fifth on the team in scoring with two goals and four assists. Cruice, from Berlin, Md., had a goal and an assist in the win over Mary Baldwin and finished the season with two goals and two assists.

Notre Dame's Stephani Jones was chosen as the league's "Most Outstanding Player" and Chris Perkins of Wells College was tabbed the AWCC "Coach of the Year."

The Blazers finished their first season under head coach Jen Wood with a record of 10-5-3 and advanced to the championship game of the 2006 AWCC tournament.
