Notre Dame Edges Women's Soccer on Penalty Kicks in AWCC Championship Game
CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.--The top-seeded College of Notre Dame (Md.) Gators snuck past the No. 2-seed Hood College women's soccer team on penalty kicks in the championship game of the Atlantic Women's Colleges Conference tournament Sunday at Wilson College. In a rematch of last year's title game, the Blazers and Gators squared off for the second time this season, with the Blazers hoping to exact some revenge after being shutout by Dame 6-0 in Baltimore during the regular season.
Hood made an early statement when Nicole Antalffy scored her second goal of the season off a rebound to give the Blazers the 1-0 advantage. But late in the first half, Dame netted the equalizer when Catherine Vecchioni put one past Hood keeper Nina Duron and the two teams went into the break deadlocked at 1-1.
The Gators continued to pepper Duron with shots throughout the match, racking up 30 shot attempts to Hood's six. But Duron stepped up in the second half making seven big saves to keep the Blazers in it.
Neither team was able to record a tally in the second half, sending the game into a 10-minute sudden-victory overtime period. But once again, both teams came up empty and the contest went into penalty kicks.
Senior Tamara Maggard had the first crack at the net for Hood but her attempt was saved by Courtney Zgraggen. On Dame's first attempt, Nicki Eigenbrode was able to convert to put the Gators up 1-0. Freshman Colleen Cruice was next for Hood and she answered the call, to tie it up at one goal apiece. But the Gators responded right back as Sara Breidenbaugh beat Duron to regain the edge for Dame, 2-1.
Both teams missed their third round attempts and, with two pairs remaining, Dame held the slim 2-1 edge.
Freshman Laura Hines was Hood's fourth choice and she was able to put one past Zgraggen to make it 2-2. However, Megan Quigg notched Dame's third PK goal to put the Gators back on top once again.
Then, in the fifth and final round, the Blazers turned to freshman Brittany Hurt for the tying goal, but her attempt was saved by Zgraggen and the Gators clinched the victory.
Duron made 15 saves in a spectacular effort in goal while Zgraggen finished with five stops.
