Women's Soccer Seeks First AWCC Title Since 1995
FREDERICK, Md.--After completing just their second winning season in program history, the Hood College women's soccer team heads to Chambersburg, Pa., in search of their first Atlantic Women's Colleges Conference tournament title in 11 years. The Blazers are the No. 2 seed in this weekend's tournament and will take on the No. 3 seed Chatham College Cougars on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Wilson College. In her first season at the helm, head coach Jen Wood guided the Blazers to a phenomenal 9-5-2 overall record and a sparkling 5-1-0 mark in the AWCC. Hood has staked its claim as a contender for the conference crown by using a balanced scoring attack and a stingy defense which ranks tops in the league. The Blazers have allowed just 23 goals in 16 games, an average of 1.44 goals per contest. In addition, Hood has shut out the opposition nine times, more than twice as many as any other conference foe.
On the offensive end, 11 different Blazers have contributed goals this season, led by freshman sensation Whitney Boyer who registered nine goals in her first 12 collegiate games. She has been sidelined for Hood's last four games due to injury and is not likely to participate in the tournament. But since Boyer went down on Oct. 13, six different Blazers have found the back of the net.
In Hood's regular season meeting with the Cougars (5-7-1, 4-2-0) on Sept. 23, the Blazers blanked Chatham 2-0 in Washington, Pa. Boyer and classmate Brittany Hurt scored for the Blazers while the Hood defenders limited Chatham to just six shots, two of which were on goal.
The Cougars, who earned four of their five wins on the season against conference opponents, boast three of the top seven scorers in the league in Halley Brus (1.55 ppg), Kristie Brannon (1.25 ppg) and Chrissy Fiori (1.17 ppg).
The goalkeeper comparison is an interesting one, as the Blazers have relied upon the steady play of freshman Nina Duron throughout the season. She has patrolled the Blazer net for all 1472:51 this season and leads the AWCC in goals-against average at 1.41. Meanwhile, the Cougars have rotated five different keepers into the net. Julia Schnopp, who faced the Blazers back in September, has appeared in seven games and has allowed 11 goals while making 39 stops.
Last year, the Blazers also claimed the No. 2 spot in the standings and defeated Chestnut Hill, 2-1, to advance to the title game. However, the College of Notre Dame (Md.) dashed the Blazers' championship hopes, handing Hood a 4-1 defeat.
In the other semifinal matchup at 11 a.m., the No. 1 College of Notre Dame (Md.) Gators face the No. 4 Wells College Express.
This is the final season that the Blazers will be competing as members of the AWCC. Starting next fall, the women's soccer team will join the Capital Athletic Conference.
