Penn State-Altoona Upends Women's Soccer in Overtime
FREDERICK, Md.--Heather Darnell scored the equalizer with 2:49 to play in regulation, then netted the game-winner 41 seconds into overtime to give the visiting Penn State University-Altoona Lions a 2-1 victory over the Hood College women's soccer team Monday afternoon in a non-conference game at Thomas Athletic Field.
The Lions snapped Hood's five-game win streak with the victory and improved to 5-6-4 on the season, while the Blazers move to 9-5-1 overall. After a scoreless first half, freshman Colleen Cruice got the Blazers on the board with her second goal of the season off a pass from sophomore Liz Rakowski just 2:59 into the second period. The Blazers limited the Lions to only four shots in the second half; but with less than three minutes to play in regulation, Darnell and Hood keeper Nina Duron battled for a loose ball and Darnell was able to clear it and score the equalizer for Altoona.
Prior to that tally, Duron had not allowed a goal in a span of 306:31 dating back to the contest with Mary Baldwin on Oct. 13.
The Lions struck quickly in the extra session as Darnell dribbled past the Hood defenders, found the open net and scored the golden goal for Altoona.
Duron and Penn State's Carol Opiela each made eight saves in the contest. The Blazers close out the regular season Saturday at Averett College in Danville, Va., at 2 p.m.
