Red-Hot Women's Soccer Topples Mary Baldwin, 4-1
FREDERICK, Md.--Sophomore defender Liz Rakowski scored a pair of goals and freshman defender Colleen Cruice tallied a goal and an assist to lead the Hood College women's soccer team to a 4-1 victory over Mary Baldwin College Friday afternoon in an Atlantic Women's Colleges Conference game at Thomas Athletic Field.
The Blazers, who have now won three straight game and six of their last seven, boost their record to 7-4-1 overall and 5-1-0 in the AWCC, while the Fighting Squirrels move to 3-6-0, 2-3-0 in the league.
The contest was scoreless for the majority of the first half until Rakowski connected on her third goal of the season off a feed from senior Tamara Maggard with just under four minutes to play.
Shortly into the second period, Max Wood got Mary Baldwin on the board when she scored off a pass from Lizzy Coltrane.
But just about five minutes later, the Blazers registered back-to-back goals within 47 seconds to turn a 1-1 tie into a 3-1 advantage. Rakowski netted her second goal of the game at the 55:31 mark and Cruice fed junior Courtney DeSisto for her second tally of the year at 56:18. Then in the 63rd minute, Cruice added a score of her own, the first goal of her collegiate career, off a feed from junior Liz Foreman.
Freshman goalie Nina Duron racked up six saves for the Blazers, while Brianna Aviles tallied 10 saves in the losing effort.
Hood returns to action Thursday, Oct. 19 when it hosts Gallaudet at 3 p.m.
