FREDERICK, Md. - Hood College used a 12-0 run over 37 minutes of game time to cruise to a 16-4 win over Washington & Jefferson College this afternoon. The Blazers improve to 2-0 with the victory.
Ashley Kitzmiller (Westminster, Md. / Manchester Valley) led the Hood with a game-high four goals in the contest. Brigid Ayer (Frederick, Md. / Frederick) and Megan Feldtmose (Hereford, Pa. / Perkiomen) each added three goals each. Taylor McGaughey (New Market, Md. / Oakdale) found her way into the record books with a four-assist day, just one shy of the school record.
Shay Braithwaite (Montgomery Village, Md. / Watkins Mill) opened up the scoring with a free position shot just 1:05 into the game. Ayer added another goal at 27:12 to make it 2-0 Blazers.
The Presidents' Diana Harvey scored her first of three goals to cut the game to 2-1 with 21:42 remaining in the half.
The big Hood run started at 19:36 with a goal from Christina Murphy (Denville, N.J. / Morris Knolls) to extend the lead to 3-1. Ayer scored her second of the game 96 seconds later, with the assist coming from McGaughey. Kitzmiller scored the next two goals, at 12:59 and 7:55, to give the Blazers the 6-1 lead.
McGaughey added a free position goal at 7:10, and assisted on a goal by Feldtmose just 20 seconds later. McGaughey recorded her third assist of the half when Murphy scored with 6:39 remaining to make it a 9-1 lead. Niether team scored after that point and Hood entered the break up eight.
Braithwaite converted her second free position goal to begin the scoring in the second half with 22 minutes left in the game. Feldtmose added her second goal just 23 seconds later, and scored her third at 18:22 to open up a 12-1 lead.
Anne Lessard (Natick, Mass. / Natick) scored her first career goal with 17:09 to go in the game and Kitzmiller scored the last goal of the run at 15:15 and the Blazers had a 14-1 lead.
The Presidents got back on the board with 13:02 with a goal from Alex Dikos, and Harvey added another 59 seconds later to cut the deficit to 14-3.
Ayer scored her final goal, from McGaughey, with 7:39 on the clock to extend the lead back to 12. Kitzmiller added the final Hood goal with just over two minutes remaining, for a 16-3 lead. Harvey added the last goal of the game with five seconds left.
Lauren Couch (Crownsville, Md. / Old Mill) made 10 saves for the Blue and Grey, and Kelsey Rotenberg made nine for the Presidents.
The Blazers were a perfect 3-of-3 on free position shots, while Washington & Jefferson came up empty on five attempts.
Braithwaite and McGaughey led Hood in draw controls, with five and four respectively. McGaughey also added four caused turnovers.
The Blazers return to action on March 4 to host Mount Union.
